EL: The Grief Was Real

The Exit Logs Series

No one warned me that leaving the system would break my heart.

Not because I missed the Matrix.

But because I had to let go of the person I became to survive it.

Grief isn't just about death.

It’s about the space left behind

when the false self falls away.

The version of you who could smile through anything.

The one who got praised for being adaptable.

For being agreeable.

For being so damn good at managing dysfunction.

That version wasn’t fake.

It was protective.

It got you here.

But you can’t carry both your truth and your mask

through the same door.

Something has to be released.

And it hurts.

Even when it’s right.

Even when you’re certain.

You grieve the jobs you walked away from.

The friendships that stopped calling.

The identities that used to make sense.

The places that don’t feel like home anymore.

You grieve the ease of pretending.

Because waking up doesn’t mean feeling better.

It means feeling everything.

There is a strange silence that follows deconditioning.

A hollowing out.

Not because you’re empty—

but because you’re making room

for the version of you that never got to breathe.

Let it come slowly.

Let the grief rip you clean.

There is no shame in mourning

what you no longer align with.

It means you're alive.

It means the system didn’t win.
